Duffy the Disney Bear

Newest Trailer for ABC’s ‘The Neighbors’ Includes Clear Image of Duffy the Disney Bear

August 8, 2012 By Erin De Santiago Leave a Comment

Since the initial trailers for ABC’s new fall show The Neighbors made their way online back in May, people have noticed little glimpses of a 2011 Duffy the Disney Bear in several shots.

Just a week or two ago, they began showing a new trailer in the US and my Mom is the one who caught it — the “More Heart than Humanly Possible” trailer includes a full shot of Duffy this time!

The Neighbors is set to debut on September 26 and, I will be in Spain that week for a travel blogging conference. Will try to catch it on Hulu or have Mom DVR it so I can watch when I am in the US in October.

ABC's 'The Neighbors' debuts September 26

While yes, it’s convenient product placement by ABC/Disney, and I am sure a number of people will complain, I am just excited to see Duffy make any sort of appearance on TV. It will be interesting to see if Duffy is an integral part of the show, and addressed by name, or just a mere prop who, at one point, is painfully ripped from the daughter’s hands by her brother in one show trailer. Poor Duffy!

If the video shows “only available in the US” try using this link to The Neighbors trailer as I was able to view it in Europe.

Original ABC ‘The Neighbors’ Trailer

In this trailer, you get a quick glimpse of Duffy as he’s ripped from the girl’s arm by her brother and you can see him again (well his paw anyways) when the family is all in bed together.

Premise of ‘The Neighbors’

If you are not familiar with the new show, it is written by Dan Fogelman (Cars, Tangled, and Crazy, Stupid, Love) who is also an executive producer with Aaron Kaplan, Jeff Morton (Modern Family) and Chris Koch (Workaholics, Modern Family).

The premise involves the Weaver family who moves to a private gated community in New Jersey and soon discovers their neighbors are from another planet, literally, and all have pro-athlete names.

The Neighbors stars Jami Gertz (Entourage, Modern Family, Still Standing, Ally McBeal) as Debbie Weaver, Lenny Venito (Bored to Death, Men in Black III, Person of Interest, Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Marty Weaver, Simon Templeman as Larry Bird, Toks Olagundoye as Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Clara Mamet as Amber Weaver, Tim Jo (Glory Daze) as Reggie Jackson, Ian Patrick (Wanderlust) as Dick Butkis, Max Charles (The Three Stooges, The Amazing Spider-Man) as Max Weaver, Isabella Cramp as Abby Weaver.

Guest starring are Mitch Rouse as the Real Estate Agent and Doug Jones as Alien. Co-Starring are Bruce Green as Angry Man and Mary K. DeVault as Angry Woman.

Will you be watching The Neighbors to catch a glimpse of Duffy in the series?

Space Mountain Photo Essay: A Look at the Attraction Worldwide with Duffy the Disney Bear

May 28, 2011 By Erin De Santiago 1 Comment

Yesterday, May 27, marked the anniversary of the Space Mountain attraction at Disneyland California, which opened in 1977.   I distinctly remember my fear of this ride as a child — for years my Mom wouldn’t take me on it assuming I would throw up like so many other parents warned of.  Ironically, as an adult, it’s become one of my favorite attractions (and hers too).

During my travels to each of the Disney Resorts around the world, riding Space Mountain at least once is always on the list.  And for the last two years, we’ve had a Disney mascot to enjoy Space Mountain with.  In 2008, Tokyo Disney released a set of special cast member outfits for Duffy the Disney Bear to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Tokyo Disneyland.  One of our Duffy Bears is donning his Space Mountain CM outfit and we named him Spuffy (or Spaceman Spuff) — a combination of Duffy, Space Mountain, and my favorite — Calvin and Hobbes Spaceman Spiff.

In honor of Space Mountain’s 34th Anniversary, Spuffy and I will take you on a photographic tour of all the Space Mountain attractions at Disney Resorts around the globe.

Space Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

An iconic image for me growing up in Southern California.  Even when we weren’t going to Disneyland, I always remember driving along the 5 fwy and watching for the Matterhorn and the spires from Space Mountain.  Back in 2000, one of my longtime dreams came true — we got stuck on the ride! After about 20 minutes, we were the last car they evacuated and since I was with several CM’s that day, we were able to get a pretty good view of what it looks like with the lights on.  While there is no legendary basketball court as people say with the Matterhorn, we did get to see a few tables and chairs and what looked like a ping pong table. LOL

In recent years as part of the Halloween festivities, Space Mountain has undergone a slight transformation for “Ghost Galaxy”.  This first debuted at Hong Kong Disneyland and became part of the California ride in 2009 and was brought back again in 2010.

Space Mountain at Walt Disney World

This is the Space Mountain I am least familiar with since I have only visited WDW a small number of times.  Visually, it is one of the more appealing attractions, especially the way it is lit up at night.  A lot of people don’t realize that Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain attraction actually opened before Disneyland’s in California.  The soft opening for Space Mountain in WDW’s Magic Kingdom was December 1974 with the official grand opening a month later.  This is the only Space Mountain where riders do not sit side by side.

Space Mountain: Mission 2 at Disneyland Paris

The current Space Mountain: Mission 2 attraction has been delighting European Disney fans since April 2005. The previous name was De la Terre à la Lune, which opened in 1995 and then closed in January 2005 to make room for the refurbishment and redesign.  The original design paid homage to Jules Verne’s classic, From the Earth to the Moon. The new Mission 2 is supposed to be a continuation of Verne’s classic, where riders are now taken further into space on a new adventure.

Spuffy is ready to ride!
Uh oh, looks like he may not meet the height requirement on this one!

If you aren’t familiar with this version at Disneyland Paris, you will be in for quite a surprise your first timeas Space Mountain: Mission 2 goes upside down!  Yup, this is the only Space Mountain attraction that features inversions — three of them in fact.  If you think the rides in the US Disney Resorts are fast — this one is not for the faint of heart.  I was pretty disoriented the first time I rode this…well, and the second time too.  For those who are prone to motion sickness, you may want to sit this one out — or just make it your last ride before leaving. 🙂

A Space Mountain that goes upside down? Perhaps Spuffy is rethinking this one!

Space Mountain at Hong Kong Disneyland

Surprisingly, this is one of the rides you can always pretty much just walk right on at Hong Kong Disneyland — even when the park is crowded.  Usually we end up riding this one two or three times, depending on how long we are staying at the Park that day.  This Space Mountain is the newest one (discounting other Parks’ refurbishments) and opened in conjunction with the park in September 2005.  Hong Kong Disneyland probably has the best queue interior of the ride, despite being the smallest.  There are lots of bright colored lights and a virtual solar system hanging above.

You will note in the photos from Hong Kong Disneyland, the entire park is surrounded by mountains — real ones.  These are no Disney artist backdrops!

As I previously mentioned in the Anaheim Disneyland section, the Halloween themed Ghost Galaxy started at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2007.  It is part of their annual Halloween event that includes actual Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios type maze attractions — the best time to visit HK Disneyland in my opinion!

Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland

Nearly identical to the one in Disneyland California (in my opinion), Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain attraction opened in 1983, when the Resort opened its doors.  The ride is nice, but it is one of the most frustrating lines.  The only way to ride this one is to do a FastPass, otherwise you can get stuck for seemingly hours while everyone with passes are admitted in masses.  The outdoor snaking queue lines remind me of the olden days of Anaheim Disneyland pre-Fast Pass.  The only difference is — it can be 100F and humid while you are waiting in line in Tokyo.  Uuughh.

Obviously Spuffy likes this Space Mountain the best because his outfit is nearly a replica of the current CM costumes.  It’s fun to be in the Tokyo Resort with him, because the Space Mountain CMs get very excited when they see him and other local Duffy fans always acknowledge him because this series of costumes are very sought after, both in Japan and abroad.

Another one of Spuffy’s visit to Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland

One caveat about Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain attraction — there are no photos at the end! While the bright light goes off and it looks like the other rides that snaps your photo — sorry, no luck here. It is the only “professional” photo of Spuffy riding Space Mountain I will never get.

Have you been on more than one Space Mountain attraction?  Which resort is your favorite?

How Our Duffy the Disney Bears Celebrated Cinco de Mayo

May 6, 2011 By Erin De Santiago 1 Comment

After traveling since the end of March, I admit to being not only remiss on updating the blog, but I’ve completely lost track of time.  I forgot Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day were both this week!  Eeek.  It wasn’t until 3pm on Thursday that I realized it was already the 5th.  We had just gotten back on Monday from Europe and haven’t completely restocked the refrigerator so my options for cooking dinner were rather limited.  Living in Taipei makes grocery shopping for “Western” style ingredients a bit challenging at times.  I had enough to make chicken taquitos and mango/cilantro margaritas (don’t knock ’em til you try ’em…they are quite good!).  One of our Duffy Bears slipped on his Mexico outfit from Disney California Adventure and the mood was set. Ole!

Not surprisingly, my Mom had to outdo us a bit with one of her Duffy Bears and take him out for Mexican food with them.  I am sure she is going to hate me for posting this publicly, but she sent me photos — complete with an attached storyline!  It is too cute not to share (sorry Mom!)

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night-time would find me in Rosa’s cantina;
Music would play and Felina would whirl.

Mom's Duffy trying to snatch some salsa

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.

Ooooo bear paw on the table!

So, who is this mysterious Felina? Apparently, the restaurant had a special hostess in Mexico costuming to greet people for Cinco de Mayo.  Mom asked if she would mind taking a photo with Duffy — too cute!

Duffy and "Felina"

Hope you had an enjoyable Cinco de Mayo no matter where you celebrated it!

Duffy the Disney Bear Debuts at Disney California Adventure

October 16, 2010 By Erin De Santiago 2 Comments

Thursday, October 14th was the official opening day for Duffy the Disney Bear at both the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.  I had planned to attend the release at both Epcot and Disney California Adventure for my Worldwide Disney Theme Parks column, but sadly had to cancel my brief trip to Florida due to unfortunate family circumstances.

The information release for Duffy’s opening ceremony indicated it would be at 9:45am with the official park opening time at 10am.  I had sent a request for clarification on the official time, however, I never heard anything back.  We arrived at the DL Resort around 9:20am and were surprised to find pretty lengthy lines to get in.  After about 10 minutes, they began letting people in who all went running towards Grizzly Rapids.  My mother figured they were headed to get FastPasses for the World of Color show and I had no idea what they were doing.  I just knew we only had 10 minutes to get to the ceremony.

Lines to get into DCA at 9:20am

After mistakenly trying to go down the straightest route by the Wine Country Trattoria, we were met with a sea of guests and a rope.  A CM told me we could go around by Grizzly Rapids to get back there so off I went with only two minutes to spare!  As I passed the FP area for World of Color, there were probably already 200 or more people in line!

I arrived to find numerous kids in the media area, which ended up working fairly well since I was able to see over them.  The area was pretty packed, but not everyone was there for Duffy.  Paradise Pier itself was blocked off with a rope so the hundreds of people waiting to get back there were now in the middle of the Duffy ceremony about to begin.

Staging area for the Duffy ceremony

Disneyland Ambassador, Danielle DuBois, and Michael O’Grattan, Senior VP of Entertainment and Imaging led the ceremony where they invited Mickey and Minnie on stage with their own stuffed Duffy Bears dressed in the sailor outfit.   The ceremony finale included a short processional to bring the Duffy the Disney Bear character up on stage, followed by an explosion of streamers.

Everyone posed for a few media pictures and I made a beeline for the store to see what was merchandise was available.  I was mainly curious to see how many outfits were released and what the store displays looked like.

I was surprised to see Duffy taking up such a small area of Treasures in Paradise.  There was just a corner of the store devoted to Duffy merchandise, but the theming was cute.  They are really capitalizing on the travel aspect of Duffy and the bears were placed in suitcases and trunks that have country stickers all over.  There is a sign that says, “Where will you take him?”  There were six outfits released — sailor, Canada, Mexico, China, a baseball jersey, and a safari outfit.  They brought back the 12 inch “My First Disney Bear” as “My First Duffy Bear” with the classic Tokyo bear style.   There was also a 12 inch Holiday Bear that was quite cute and a keychain that is similar to the ones you find at Tokyo DisneySea.  The 17 inch bears and 12 inch dressed bears retail for $25 each, outfits are $15, $8 for the keychain, and the large size bear retails for $60.  I have since learned that Epcot received quite a bit more merchandise than DCA did — including several different outfits, a WDW 40th Anniversary 12 inch bear, and the zipper pouch and magnet that are popular in Tokyo.

Lots of keychains, which did not last too long!

There has been a lot of discussion online about the quality of the outfits and bears here versus those you get from TDS.  There are definitely differences and the outfits here seem to be more kid friendly – lacking a lot of separate pieces and adornments.  Many of the designs on the outfits you would probably see done in layers and/or embroidery if they were released at TDS.  As my mom pointed out, the $40 price tag would not work for the Disney Parks here so they needed to be simplified.  I think some of the outfits are quite cute and I like the inclusion of the Mickey heads in select areas (like the material used for the China outfit).

Of course, I had all six of my bears in attendance for the event, while my Mom had her three.  One of my bears was wearing his Halloween costume — the Tim Burton version of the Mad Hatter.  Needless to say, he drew quite a bit of attention from the get go.  I ended up talking with Sarah Tully who writes the awesome blog “Around Disney” for the OC Register and later found her video counterpart cornering me as I was shopping.  LOL.  We also had the opportunity to chat with Monty, who designs the Duffy merchandise for the US Parks, and he was in awe of Chuffy (yes, my Duffy Bears all have individual names that end in “uffy”) in his Mad Hatter outfit.  Chuffy was treated like an absolute celebrity and Mom and I were the lucky recipient of some cool stuff – one CM gave us each a Duffy pin (the mystery ones released previously at WDW), while another went in the back and gave us both one of the Duffy chocolate cups and Rice Krispie treats!

After buying one of everything released (sans the sailor outfit, and 17 inch and 28 inch bears since Mom was able to get me a sailor suit bear at the passholder event), we were off to finally have our photo taken with Duffy.  The grand total for everything with the 20% passholder discount was only $115 – about 1/4 of my first purchase at Tokyo DisneySea a few weeks ago for the Halloween merchandise!

We headed out for the Duffy line, which was quite minimal, and found Duffy trying to count how many bears we had in tow (had to bring them all for the official release day!)  After finishing up with Duff,y I went back in to finally get some photos of the merchandise and ran into two girls from Japan.  They spoke very little English, but I managed to find out they flew out from Tokyo just for the event.   After that, I spotted someone else with a Shellie May and turns out, it was the person I was hoping to meet.  Margaret is a member of my Disney Theme Parks Facebook page and we’ve chatted a bit online about Duffy and the event.  It was great to meet her and Norio and find out how much we really have in common.  She’s from Taiwan, which is where I have lived for the past 1 1/2 years, and I hope we will get to meet up when she visits early next year.   We chatted a bit more and managed to draw a few more interesting stares from passersby.  We went back and took a couple photos together with Duffy….and again, no real line.  Oh, if that was only the case in Tokyo whenever I am there!

After saying our goodbyes, Mom and I headed off to Disneyland to nibble on the Halloween treats and meet up with my aunt and cousin who were also visiting the resort.  We ended up coming back to Treasures in Paradise around 4pm and found the shelves were nearly bare.  Only a few 17 inch bears remained, a few 12 inch “My First Duffy” bears, one 28 inch bear was on the shelf, and a few Mexico outfits were spread out to keep the wall hooks from being empty.  That was pretty much it.  One of the CMs said they should get more keychains an hour or so later, but we had World of Color dinner reservations and didn’t have time to go back.

Shelves almost empty at 4pm at Treasures in Paradise

Walking back to Paradise Pier again, we spotted the balloon vendors that had the Duffy balloon.  It is cute — a large Duffy is on one side and the other has Mickey holding Duffy.  I had planned to come back and find out how much they were, but we never saw anyone else selling them again and of course, everything was shut down after World of Color.

The last Duffy item I spotted was the kid’s menu at the Wine Country Trattoria.  It’s an activity placemat and has different mazes, games, etc., along with Duffy dressed in his various costumes — again focusing on the travel aspect of Duffy.

All in all, the event was handled well, the ceremony was short, but cute, and Duffy seemed to be well-received by those in attendance.  There was a number of management level and above Disney employees on hand for the event so there is definitely a lot of eyes monitoring how everything went.  I hope Duffy succeeds and people keep an open mind on what a cute and lovable character he is.  Personally, I would’ve preferred he stay exclusive to Tokyo, and I am a bit surprised to see him making his way back to the Parks.  I figured it was inevitable and even predicted it in my earlier Duffy article on Examiner this week, but I learned that Duffy will be coming to Disneyland Paris in December.  I will probably not make it back to Paris for his release however…maybe not until February or March sometime.

I will post separate entries on our foodie experience at the Wine Country Trattoria as well as photos from World of Color.  I just have to end this by saying I managed to talk my Mom into adopting another Duffy Bear so now she has four bears (a Duffy and Shellie May from Tokyo and two from Disney California Adventure).  She bought 5 outfits so she really needed another bear to wear some of them!  Be sure to check out the gallery below for the rest of the event day photos.
